Updated: 6 days ago

OPAS opened its highly anticipated 17th season with a dazzling performance of Broadway Sings for OPAS, held on Friday, September 27th. The star-studded event introduced The OPAS Philharmonic and featured legendary conductor/arranger Larry Blank, Broadway stars Emily Padgett and Josh Young, and the UK's award-winning big band singer, Matt Ford.  The evening was filled with unforgettable renditions of classic and contemporary hits from some of Broadway's most memorable musicals, much to the delight of the sold-out crowd.

The evening was a celebration of the arts and a showcase of the incredible talent that OPAS bringto the community. Attendees were treated to numerous show-stopping performances, including Mr. Young's extraordinary turn in "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar.  With his powerful vocals and dynamic stage presencee it was clear to the appreciative crowd why Mr. Young received a Tony nomination for his work on this show.

The OPAS Philharmonic soared and impressed on "Come Back to Me" alongside the perfectly stylized vocals masterfully delivered by song stylist Matt Ford.

Blank led the group with a steady hand and added bits of personal banter about his storied career in the American Theater. It was announced to the crowd that he is to be both conductor and orchestrator for next year's highly anticipated Broadway musical tribute to Frank Sinatra.

The pacing of the evening was masterful, with the second act being particularly powerful. The audience departed humming memorable tunes from the magical world of Broadway after this very strong start to the 17th season of OPAS.

"We couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off our 17th season," said Doug LaBrecque, OPAS Artistic Director.  "The energy in the room was electric, and we are so grateful to everyone who came out to support us. Events like Broadway Sings for OPAS are a reminder of how much music enriches our lives and brings people together. Kudos to all of the musicians who battled the heavy rains from Hurricane Helene to bring world-class entertainment to OPAS."

Next up on October 6th is OPAS Unplugged featuring the Ehnes Quartet.
