OPAS Brings Motown and The Philly Sound to Lake Country with an Electrifying Evening of Style and Symphony

Oconee Performing Arts Society continued its remarkable season with a high-energy celebration of Motown and The Philly Sound, bringing audiences an evening filled with familiar hits, polished showmanship, and the kind of world-class artistry that is an OPAS hallmark.

Featuring The Augusta Symphony under the baton of Maestro Dirk Meyer, the concert featured impressive orchestrations that elevated the original versions of these beloved songs while preserving the groove, sophistication, and emotional pull that made them classics. The evening moved effortlessly from upbeat, danceable favorites to moments of surprising dramatic depth, including a powerful performance of The Temptations’ “Ball of Confusion,” a protest song rooted in the Vietnam War era and the social unrest of the early 1970s.

All three vocalists proved seasoned and well suited to the material. Chester Gregory was a standout, bringing star presence, vocal command, and a natural connection with the audience. His story about playing Berry Gordy in Broadway’s Motown: The Musical for years before performing one of the evening’s selections was a highlight, and a clear reminder of the caliber of guest artists OPAS consistently brings to Lake Country.

The production matched the musical excellence. With lighting and staging that felt polished and theatrical, the concert had the look and energy of a Broadway theatre or Las Vegas showroom. The mood throughout was upbeat and joyful, giving the audience every reason to clap, sway, and celebrate.

This performance also underscored the extraordinary variety of OPAS programming this season. From Broadway and symphonic concerts to intimate jazz, chamber music, holiday music, and community events, OPAS continues to demonstrate what a treasure it is for Lake Country. Just as important, OPAS remains deeply committed to supporting children through arts education programs, scholarships, and meaningful access to the performing arts for thousands of local students.

Next up for OPAS is the extremely popular Memorial Day Weekend Concert. Join OPAS as it closes out a memorable season celebrating the great ladies of Country Music, including Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, and more. Featuring the Macon Pops, Grammy-winning vocalist Nicole Zuraitis, and Grammy-winning conductor Matt Catingub, this beloved outdoor concert has become THE event to kick off summer in Lake Country.

The concert takes place Saturday, May 23 at 8 PM at The Farm At Oconee. Tickets at 706-467-6000 or the link below.

The music event article was lively because it shows entertainment experiences. I once attended a music night and enjoyed it. I also saw online compTIA exam takers while browsing study discussions online. It made me think enjoyment and effort both matter.
