OPAS Arts Education Programs Thrill Local Students

Updated: Apr 4

Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) continues its commitment to arts education, bringing world-class artists to local students through engaging masterclasses and live performances. Recently, OPAS presented several impactful educational events, enriching the learning experiences of over 700 students in Putnam and Greene Counties.

On March 20th, renowned jazz trumpeter and conductor Byron Stripling led an inspiring masterclass at Greene County High School, sharing his expertise and passion for music with aspiring young musicians. On March 25-26, Phantom of the Opera star Lisa Vroman conducted masterclasses at Lake Oconee Academy and Putnam County High School, offering students invaluable vocal coaching and insights into the performing arts industry.

Additionally, OPAS presented Americana Women at Rock Eagle’s Talmadge Auditorium, a tribute to the importance of women songwriters in American music.  Americana Women held a Q and A and a masterclass, allowing students to learn directly from seasoned professionals.

OPAS thanks Tony Kalka and Christine and Mark St.Clare for sponsoring Americana Women. We also deeply appreciate the support of Ellen and Jeff Lemming, Tim Green, Sue and Steven Cross, Mike and Donna O’Neal, and Jo and Ron Foster for making the masterclasses a reality for local students.

OPAS is now accepting applications for its college performing arts scholarship, with a submission deadline of April 30, 2025. We thank all of our supporters, especially Bo Fears, Kathy and Steve Whitcomb, and Laura and Jeffrey Shulman for their generous sponsorship of the OPAS Performing Arts Scholarships. Interested students can apply at https://www.opas.org/performing-arts-scholarship.

Looking ahead, OPAS is excited to present Rhapsody in Blue and the Music of George Gershwin, celebrating the 100th anniversary of this iconic piano masterpiece. Michael Preacely, a veteran of major productions of Porgy and Bess, joins us alongside the legendary trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. It is sure to be a stunning musical evening that explores the many facets and musical stylings of this American icon. Festival Hall 7:30 PM April 25.

On Saturday, May 24th, OPAS presents Billy Joel, Elton John, and More, starring celebrated pianist/singer Michael Cavanaugh. Bring your own picnic and ANY beverage and enjoy this family-friendly annual Memorial Day Weekend event at The Farm at Oconee. Children 10 and under are complimentary.
