A Memorable OPAS February

The Oconee Performing Arts Society(OPAS) has enjoyed a memorable 15th season. The fall season was filled with the sounds of world-class vocalists and the stunning orchestra that has become a trademark of the premiere arts organization in the Lake Oconee area. The month of February ended up being one of the most exciting in the organization’s history.

On February 4th, Michael Feinstein came to town to share his immense gifts. The sold-out crowd quickly understood why Mr. Feinstein is heralded as the gold standard for his Great American Songbook interpretations. His namesake clubs are located in numerous cities around the world. “This community is so fortunate to have an organization like OPAS to bring talent of this level to the area,” said OPAS member Ben Northrop.

On February 13th, OPAS provided the opportunity for local students to learn about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Virginia Repertory Theater returned to the area and presented “I Have A Dream.” The play, performed by a group of talented young professional touring actors, was seen by more than 700 students, made possible by OPAS and their expanding Arts Education Initiatives.

On Sunday, February 5th, upcoming Guest Artist Samara Joy was nominated for two Grammy Awards. Although an underdog for the awards, Ms. Joy received the Best New Artist Grammy, an award rarely bestowed upon a jazz artist.

Later in the program, she was awarded her second Grammy for Best New Jazz Vocal Album. Identified in 2021 by OPAS Artistic Director Doug LaBrecque as “someone to watch,” she has become an international sensation in the last few months. Her concerts across the globe are sellouts, and her concert with OPAS on March 31st is no exception. The concert is a member-only event, and every seat has been sold. “We tried to add a performance so more local audiences could be introduced to her, but her schedule did not allow it,” said OPAS Operation’s Manager Sandra Meng.

OPAS concludes its season on May 27th with its outdoor family-friendly Memorial Concert featuring the music of Billy Joel. OPAS will announce its 2023 Performing Arts Scholarship recipients at this event, and awards will be given to the best table decor!
