2010 OPAS Village Series
2nd Annual Village Cardboard Boat Regatta

Saturday, August 14th
Village Pond
Lake Oconee Village
Greensboro, GA

The 2nd Annual VILLAGE Regatta made a splash again this year with Lake Oconee

residents and visitors. Despite the weather forecast of high temperatures and possible

thunderstorms, approximately 2,000 spectators turned out to see local businesses and

residents compete for their chance to go down in Regatta history.

The day began at 2:00 pm to the cool sounds of the Tropical Breeze Steel Drum Band with all 11 teams'

boats on display until 4:00 pm soliciting votes for the People’s Choice award in the form of donations to the

charity of the team’s choice. This year’s People’s Choice award

winner is Pepa Manoanoa Moku in LOKO OCO NEE with a total of

$576.05 raised for the Oconee Performing Arts Society. Other charities

chosen by the teams are The Ferst Foundation, American Cancer Society, Reynolds

Foundation, Oconee Regional Humane Society, Festival Hall, Lake Oconee Academy,

OPAS Education & Outreach, Variety Children’s Charity, and the Greene County Food Pantry.

Shortly after 4:00 pm the boats raced against each other around the speed course to see who would take home the 1st place

trophy, The Black Pearl, 2nd place trophy, Second Hand Rose, and 3rd place trophy,

The Third Wheel. To level the playing field, the boats were split into classes; Schooner

class (1 to 5 member teams) and the Brigantine class (6 to 10 member teams).

This year the winners in each class are:

Schooner Class (1 to 5 Member Teams)
Team Boat Time
1st Place Dirty Dock Hands SS Minnow II 2' 40"
2nd Place Team Festivus Tippy Canoe 4' 17"
3rd Place Sycamore Oconee Real Estate Sycamore Sails       6' 28"

Brigantine Class (6 to 10 Member Teams)
Team Boat Time
1st Place  Pepa Manoanoa Moku LOKO OCO NEE 2' 58"
2nd Place 2 Men & a Boat with Anchors     Iron Clad 3' 41"
3rd Place Del Webb Blazing Paddles Puff the Magic Dragon        3' 52"

In addition to the speed race trophies, boaters also competed for the Titanic award for the

most spectacular sinking, the Unsinkable Molly Brown award for the last boat afloat and

the Judge’s Choice award for the boat that just “Stole their Hearts.”

Spotlight Theatres in the RSS Redemption was this

year’s recipient of the Titanic award. Just as they

were making their way around the second buoy,

tragedy struck and the ship with all its crew went down. Hands down, it was the most

spectacular sinking of the day!

3 Men & A Boat’s Iron Clad was virtually indestructible this year; despite the attempts of

all those participating in the Last Boat Afloat competition, none were successful in sinking

this boat! Those who are planning on participating next year may want to chat with this

team to see if they will share the secret of their success.

The final award of the day was the Judge’s Choice award which is given to the team that

most impressed the Judges. This year, Del Webb

Blazing Paddles in Puff the Magic Dragon hold the bragging rights to this award.

Congratulations to all our teams on making the 2nd Annual VILLAGE Cardboard Boat Regatta

such a fabulous event. Your creativity and adventuresome spirits are what make this event

one of Lake Oconee’s best!
