The 1st Annual VILLAGE Regatta on August 15th 2009   Photo by: Pitter Goughnour

was a huge success with attendance estimated at

approximately 1,000 and hundreds of dollars raised for

local charities. The Tropical Breeze Steel Drum Band

provided a wide array of musical stylings with Photo by: Pitter Goughnour

everything from Calypso to Classical music that had

the crowd dancing and tapping their toes as they toured the booths of local vendors. The weather

was cool for an August afternoon in Georgia and although there were clouds in the sky, the rain held

off all day providing a welcome break from the hot weather we saw the week leading up to the event.

The speed race was entertaining to say the least with

some boats rapidly sinking  below the murky depths

and others forging ahead to claim their place in Lake

Oconee Village history, but the real highlight of the was

when the ships that survived the speed race braved the

high seas once more to duke it out for a chance at

“The Unsinkable Molly Brown” Award.  It resembled a scene

straight out of a pirate movie as opposing teams tried to take down The Singleton

Marine Group’s boat the Knot-A-Yacht with any means of terror they could muster,

but the Knot-A-Yacht held strong as the other boats began to disappear below the

water until they were dubbed the Last Boat Afloat.

After the victors were announced in the awards ceremony, raffle tickets were drawn from the tumbler to determine who would be

the lucky winners of three $50 Indulge Gift Certificates and a necklace set from Aurum. Congratulations to Julie Balestrcire,

Randy Pate and Joe Gripkey for taking home these lovely prizes.
