Sunday November 21st, OPAS presented an unforgettable evening with Michael Feinstein
at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge in Greensboro, GA. Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum selling,
five-time Grammy nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American
Songbook”, is considered one of the premiere interpreters of American Popular Song. His
150 plus shows a year have included Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and major concert
halls, as well as the White House and Buckingham Palace.
Over the course of the evening, Michael Feinstein treated audience members to an
informative journey through the songs made famous by “Old Blue Eyes,” Frank Sinatra.
Some of these songs included, Come Fly with Me, Too Marvelous For Words, Just One of Those
Things, and Thanks for the Memories. The audience was delighted by the performance and in response
to the overwhelming applause; Mr. Feinstein graced the stage again with an encore performance of
New York, New York. After the performance, OPAS Circles’ Members had the privilege of meeting Mr.
Feinstein backstage, many of which stopped to have their picture taken with the star.
MICHAEL FEINSTEIN’S AMERICAN SONGBOOK premiered this past fall on PBS. The three-part series follows Feinstein as he
explores the history of American Popular music, chronicling his lifelong mission to keep the Great American Songbook alive. He
preserves and passes along the lyrics and melodies of songwriters like George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and
Rodgers and Hart, all while performing more than 150 shows a year across the country. The series follows the meticulous
musician as he rummages though cluttered basements and dusty attics, sifts through piles in cluttered storage lockers, and
unearths obscure items in flea markets. Simultaneously, Feinstein digs deep into the artistry of performers like Frank Sinatra,
Rosemary Clooney, Nat King Cole, Ethel Waters, and Margaret Whiting, illuminating what makes them so iconic and timeless.
In all aspects of his life, Feinstein is a historical sleuth, obsessively seeking out and saving priceless musical rarities (alternate
lyrics, long-lost arrangements, and unreleased recordings) from destruction.
